Scope: Collaborates with covering physician(s) to ensure that all patient needs are met, answers complex questions regarding medications and side effects from cancer and hematologic patients via phone, serves as a resource to staff, and coordinates workflow of Medical Assistants. Serves as liaison between physician, infusion, lab, imaging and other physician offices.  Reviews all
faxes that are incoming for physician and works with physician to triage and schedule new patients. Performs nursing tasks, such as, administration of medications/vaccines, port flushes.  Completes process for Oral Chemotherapy/Genetic testing. Communicates to pharmacies and process medication refills. Reviews physician orders, for any additional orders (i.e., home health, hospice, hospital, etc).  Handles emergency calls, which come in on the emergency line.


  1. Handles incoming calls from: patients with complex questions concerning their hematologic or cancer care, internal and external facilities, other physician's offices, cancer service coordinators, and pharmacies: in a professional, efficient manner
  2. Organizes all new patient paperwork including past labs, pathology, diagnostic scans, referring physician notes; and uses knowledge to triage patients with highest risk/acuity.  Communicates with covering physician and schedules all new patients.
  3. Performs nursing duties including but not limited to administration of medication and vaccinations; IV fluid administration; dressing changes; therapeutic phlebotomy; oral chemotherapy and genetic testing; performs port and pic line flushes; discontinue pumps and other nursing/clinical tasks as requested
  4. Promotes a team approach within the clinic and positively impacts the work climate; is aware of all policies and helps to enforce them, is dependable and helps to foster an environment that is customer service oriented
  5. Coordinates workflow of Medical Assistants     
  6. Serves a resource for all staff


  1. RN, Louisiana State Board of Nursing license required
  2. Oncology, Infusion and/or Hospice experience strongly preferred
  3. OCN certification preferred
  4. Phone triage experience required
  5. Knowledge of pain management, oncology nursing, infusion strongly preferred
